Abney Park Cemetery

Abney Park Victorian Garden Cemetery is both a historical park and a Local Nature Reserve. It opened in 1840 but was neglected in the mid-20th century and the striking gothic style chapel and grounds fell into disrepair.

Now managed by the Abney Park Cemetery Trust, it has become an unusual but peaceful oasis of calm as well as a centre for various educational activities. It has a romantic and mysterious atmosphere and a diverse population of wildlife, being renowned for its birdlife and butterflies. The frontage is also the earliest European example of cemetery buildings designed in the "Egyptian Revival style".
