Bentley Priory Open Space

Designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest and Nature Reserve, Bentley Priory Open Space covers 66 hectares of meadows and woodlands as well as two ponds, and within these habitats is a wealth of bird and plant life.

The area also played an very important role in World War II; to the north of the open space is the Bentley Priory RAF base and it was from here that the Battle of Britain was commanded. The building was originally built in 1766 as a country house, although previously the area had been occupied by Augustinian friars. By the time of its acquisition by the RAF in 1926 it had also been used as hotel and girl's school. Also just off the Open Space is a private Deer Park.
