Barnet
The borough of Barnet is named after Chipping Barnet, a town that was once a major stopping point on the route north out of London which provided spring waters to travellers. Barnet became well known for its horse fair, hence "barnet" becoming rhyming slang for "hair".
At the edge of Hadley Green on the Great North Road is the probable site of the Battle of Barnet. This was a decisive and defining battle of the War of the Roses, fought in difficult conditions and resulting in the death of the Earl of Warwick. Other notable points along the route in Barnet are Hadley House, which used to be the manor house here, and Livingstone Cottage, which was the home of the great explorer in the 1850s.
