The Marshes
The final part of the London Loop travels through a number of marshland habitats, starting with the Ingrebourne Marshes, through to the Rainham and Aveley Marshes.
These ancient landscapes play an important role in flood control as well as providing homes for many bird species, an important population of water voles and some nationally rare insects and wetland plants. It was for this reason that the RSPB set up a nature reserve and visitor's centre in Rainham Marshes, on the site of what used to be a Ministry of Defence firing range.
