Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace is named after the building that housed the Great Exhibition of 1851. This huge construction was originally set up in Hyde Park, but once the Exhibition had run its course it was transferred to this site on Sydenham Hill and reconstructed, albeit with some modifications and enlargements. The Palace and its exhibition attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors each year during the Victorian era, but went into decline in the early 20th century due to lack of funding. Catastrophe struck in 1936, when the building was destroyed by fire.
Some remains of the building are still visible and the surrounding area has a boating lake, maze along with a dinosaur park which has been restored from the one constructed at the same time as Crystal Palace by Sir Joseph Paxton.
