Richmond Park
Richmond Park is by far the largest of the Royal Parks and is home to red and fallow deer, whose grazing habits have played an important part in creating the nationally important ecosystem of the park. This includes rare species of fungi and beetle, such as the cardinal click beetle and stag beetle.
The park's royal connections go back as far as the 13th Century, when it was known as the Manor of Sheen, the name changing to Richmond during the reign of Henry VIII. Charles I brought his court here in 1625 to escape the plague that had gripped London, and it was he that introduced the deer to the park and later enclosed the land in an eight mile long wall.
