Keston
The Loop passes a number of notable points here before arriving at Keston Village. The route goes past the extensive grounds of Holwood House, once home to William Pitt the Younger. Also along this stretch is the Wilberforce memorial, where the notable anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce discussed the abolition of the slave trade with Pitt the Younger, Prime Minister at the time. They were said to have sat under the shade of an old oak tree for this important conversation, although following the hurricane of 1987 only its stump remains. A bench has been placed here instead to mark this historic spot.
Keston Ponds are a little further along and here you can also find the spring known as Caesar's well. According to legend, the spring was visited by Caesar's army. It is the source of the River Ravensbourne, so named because two ravens were said to have lead the thirsty Roman army to the well.
