Bexley Village

The name "Bexley" means "clearing in the box wood", and up until about a century ago it was indeed a small village in the middle of rural countryside. Though the area has since become part of London's urban sprawl, the village itself still retains some of its past character with a number of historic buildings.

North-east of here is Hall Place, a stately home with beautiful Grade II listed gardens. Also, just a little way south of the village on this part of the route are Foots Cray Meadows. These were once part of the estate for an 18th century mansion, although the building itself burned down in 1949.

Foots Cray Meadows are also home to a large number of ring-necked parakeets, an exotic bird that came to London less than 50 years ago but can now be seen all over the capital.
