Highgate

Highgate Woods were once a part of the Ancient Forest of Middlesex and have been used for different purposes for many hundreds of years. Evidence from excavations has shown that Britons were producing pottery for the Roman market here in the first century AD and these grounds were later part of the Bishop of London's hunting estate. The whole area of Highgate was rural until relatively recently, not being joined to London until the end of the 19th Century.

The importance of the woods for wildlife, such as bats, birdlife and moths, has led to it being designated a site of Metropolitan Importance. The area is managed by the woodkeepers who live on the premises in way that allows vital fungi and invertebrate species to thrive.
