Hounslow Heath

The vast area of Hounslow Heath is a haven for many rare species of flora and fauna. It is one of London's largest nature reserves, and well over 130 species of bird have been recorded here.

It also has an intriguing history. It was once frequented by highwaymen and highwaywomen including, reputedly, the notorious Dick Turpin. During this time, the coach road through the heath would have been dotted with the hanged bodies, swinging from gibbets, of those criminals caught in the act.

At other times it has been used as an army training ground and one of the world's first commercial airports.
